Kalamazoo, Mich. - Hapman, a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of equipment and systems for bulk material handling expands its manufacturing campus in Kalamazoo, MI. Hapman, a KMC Global Company, is expanding from the company’s current capacity bringing the total manufacturing capacity to 159,000 sq ft. The addition of the new buildings allows Hapman to not only fulfill equipment orders more efficiently, but also allows for expansion of the company’s technology center and controls division.

Hapman Engineers a Volumetric Screw Feeder/Seasoner for Consistent and Accurate Dosing of Ingredients

Kalamazoo, Mich. — Hapman, an industry leader in conveyors and bulk material handling equipment for 70 years, engineers a food grade Volumetric Screw Feeder/Seasoner for applications that require a reliable, repeatable method for dosing seasoning drums and tumble coaters.

Hapman Volumetric Screw Feeder/SeasonerHapman’s PosiPortion Volumetric Screw Feeder, engineered for an accurate +/- 1% metered dose based on volume and time, is specifically designed for seasoning drums or tumble coaters for snack food and candy manufacturers. Precision dosing is measured by keeping the screw full and measuring the volume of material in the feeder coupled with turn speed, pitch of flights and turning time.

The Hapman PosiPortion Feeder/Seasoner, is available in several flow ranges. Model 321-SV is equipped with a 304 stainless steel distribution nozzle that has a 42” projection with a herringbone slot pattern. Drop Zone extends 24” from end of nozzle. The dosing screw is fabricated from 304 stainless with a nominal outside diameter of 4” standard pitch and a root diameter of 1”. This screw has an estimated range of 14-230 ft3/hr, approximately 172 ft3/hr @ 60 Hz based on free flowing powders. Model 241-SV is engineered for smaller batch operations designed with a nozzle OD of 1-1/2” with standard pitch and a root diameter of 3/8”. The capacity range of the 241-SV is approximately .88-14.2 ft3/hr or 10.6 ft3/hr @60 Hz based on free flowing powders.

The long throat design maximizes natural in-flow allowing for easy handling of difficult ingredients and compounds. Proper ingredient flow is maintained with the steep side walls on the flexible hopper and large corner radii. Featuring a FDA hopper design and food grade finishes on all contact surface including the hopper interior, screw and nozzle. Rotated 45 degrees, the feeder also reduces the number of surfaces that would be prone to holding water. Quick coupled components allow for easy disassembly and cleaning of components. Spare hoppers, screws, and nozzles are available for quick material change over with minimal downtime.

The Volumetric Feeder/Seasoner by Hapman is available with optional controls package. Controls are specified per application allowing for high/low hopper sensors, timer for batching by volume, and operator adjustable speed control. Hapman Automates Aluminum Foundry Transfer Process with a Dependable, Heavy-Duty Single Strand Top Carry Drag Conveyor

Kalamazoo, Mich. — Hapman, an industry leader in bulk material handling equipment and systems, engineers a Single Strand Top Carry Drag Chain Conveyor to automate foundry transfer process.

Hapman Drag Chain ConveyorManually shoveling sand to fill cope and drag boxes (casting flask) for sand casting is a physically demanding process for mold makers. Mold makers shovel on average, 20 tons/day of casting sand weighing 100 lbs. per cubic foot into an average of 70-80 molds per day. This demanding operating condition creates a high-level of physical strain on the mold maker’s body. To automate this process and improve operating conditions, Hapman designed and manufactured a Single Strand Top Carry Drag Chain Conveyor with integral hopper.

The redesigned mold filling process begins as prepared moist foundry sand is introduced into the hopper by a small skid steer loader. The dense material is screened as it enters the hopper to eliminate aluminum tramp metals or larger pieces from entering the process. The hopper features an electro-polished stainless steel finish, a pin style agitator, and a vibrator to keep material from bridging and to provide consistent material flow into the conveyor. The drag chain moves the sand in a consistent, metered flow to the discharge point where the mold maker controls the filling of the casting flask.

The Hapman Single Strand Top Carry Drag Chain Conveyor features a design that offers minimal maintenance requirements, and abrasion resistant construction. The Hapman drag chain is engineered in a CrMn Alloy and drop-forged construction. The chain is machined, carburized, and case hardened for strength and durability. The bolted UHMW Polyurethane flight design reduces the possibility of sand sticking on the flights while also resisting wear and providing a quiet operation.

Hapman Congratulates Baxter & Woodman on Prestigious National Award for Excellence in Engineering for their Gilberts Wastewater Treatment Project

Village of Gilberts Wastewater TreatmentBaxter & Woodman partnered with Hapman on their patent-pending Harman Barium/Radium Removal Process (HBRP) Pretreatment System for the Village of Gilberts, Ill. The municipality needed to meet increasingly stringent discharge requirements for permissible levels of Barium set by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"Congratulations to Baxter & Woodman for the award of the Grand Award from ACEC for their innovative system for the Village of Gilberts,” said, Greg Patterson, Vice President of Hapman. “Both Hapman and Gull Material Handling, the Hapman Representative in Illinois, are proud to partner with such a reputable engineering firm to provide a customized bulk material handling system to benefit the Village of Gilberts, and its citizens."

Harry Harman, P.E, and his colleagues of Baxter & Woodman pioneered the HBRP method to divert wastewater from Ion Exchange softeners into a batch operation treatment tank designed to remove high-levels of Barium and Radium. Harry worked closely with Gull Material Handling and Hapman to create a custom Bulk Bag Unloader with integral feeder to precisely and effectively deliver ballast material into the tanks as part of the settling process. “Hapman’s Bulk Bag Unloading System gave us the ability to control the settling process,” noted Harman. The system proved extremely successful for the Village of Gilberts, reducing Barium levels well within the EPA requirements without increasing levels of Radium. The system allowed for safe discharge of water into natural sources and for the biosolids to be used as fertilizer on local farm fields.

Each year our team has continued to grow, and last year we had 50 people walking on behalf of Hapman. Our employees, along with their family and friends come together and support one another and the goal of finding a cure. Hapman Attends the Industrial Minerals Association — North America Technology Workshop, March 9-11 in Orlando

Kalamazoo, Mich. — Hapman will attend and participate in the Industrial Minerals Technology Workshop, hosted by the Industrial Minerals Association – North America (IMA-NA) at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel and Spa in Orlando, Fla. on March 9-11, 2014.

Hapman's Tubular Drag Chain Conveyor Gives the S.S. Badger, America's Largest Coal-Fired Steamship New Life

Kalamazoo, Mich. — Hapman’s Tubular Drag Chain Conveying System provides a new, sealed ash-handling system for the 62-year-old SS Badger, the last coal-fired steamship operating on Lake Michigan. The conveying system will allow the ship to meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements and continue normal operations beginning in May, 2015. The Badger is a passenger and car ferry that safely transports people and cargo from Ludington, Mich. to Manitowc, Wis. and back.

Hapman’s conveyor system will assist the SS Badger to meet EPA requirements by eliminating the discharge of coal ash from the ship into Lake Michigan. The Badger has four coal-powered boilers on board which it uses to create steam to power the ship. The Hapman Tubular Drag Chain Conveyor System is a completely sealed conveying system that will transport coal ash from each of the Badger’s boilers 180 feet, safely depositing the waste material into one of four containment bins located on the ship’s deck. The ash will remain in the sealed bins until the ship docks in port. The containers will be emptied at shore and the ash will be sold for use in cement-making.

Installation of the conveyor system is underway and will be fully operational when the ship sets sail on May 15, 2015. The SS Badger, a 410-foot carferry launched in 1952, travels between Manitowoc, Wis. to Ludington, Mich. The ferry can carry 600 passengers and 180 vehicles.

LIW Flexible Screw Conveyor Doses Material For Batching Operations

Hapman, the bulk handing industry’s leading manufacturer of engineered material handling equipment, has designed a unique flexible screw conveyor that allows for batching of material within +/- 1 lb. or less of set point. The Loss-In-Weight (LIW) Helix® is a fully automated dosing system that is equipped with programmable logic and system integration tie-in functionality. The LIW Helix has load cells built into the frame assembly. The flexible screw conveyor carries the material to an elevated point at the required flow rate. Once the load cells indicate the flow volume is within 5 lbs. of set maximum the conveyor is automatically lowed to dribble mode. When the required batch volume is reached, the conveyor is precisely and automatically stopped.

Hapman to Display its Comprehensive Powder and Bulk Solids Handling Equipment at PTX Canada 2011

Hapman to display its broad spectrum of comprehensive conveying solutions to include the Helix flexible screw conveyor, vacuum pneumatic conveyor and the tubular drag conveyor for food, chemical, pharmaceutical, plastics and other industrial processors.

In addition, Hapman will unveil its new line of air operated vacuum pump technology conveyors. The system employs a wide range of modules making it adjustable according to the needs and demands of the application. The air-operated system is custom designed to meet the demands in the food and chemical industries and can process up to 10 ton/h (9 metric ton/h).
